International Day Against Homophobia - May 17, 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia. On this day, countries around the world are raising awareness about the significant social injustices suffered by people based on a fear of homosexuality. The Province of Ontario is not only fully supportive of initiatives designed to raise awareness of these injustices and the bullying and harassment suffered because of this fear. This support comes from the fundamental belief that all people deserve to be and feel safe in our society, especially in schools.

The students of J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, in our wonderfully diverse, pluralistic community, have developed a great culture of respect, caring and tolerance. Yet, regardless of the feedback we receive from students and parents about how safe they feel in the school, there is always work to be done. We are very proud that Richardson Collegiate is a leader in going beyond tolerance to acceptance and understanding. No school celebrates "Pink Shirt Day", in support of eradicating homophobic bullying like our students do. Our Gay-Straight Alliance holds a leadership position amongst schools having presented their play "Poison Words" at the board level, as well as having been asked to perform at other schools.

As a community we need to work together to create a safe school environment. We need to stop the use of words which perpetuate homophobia by making it socially unacceptable. We need to support each other by pointing out homophobic language and having discussions about acceptance, compassion, and respect. At the end of the day, as humans we have far more in common than we have differences and yet it is the differences that we focus on and let keep us apart. We need to change. Here is a link to a website dedicated to the International Day Against Homophobia and a video they have posted called End the Fear.

Grade 8 Football Camp PDF Print E-mail

On the last weekend of April, 57 grade eight boys and girls from our various feeder schools attended the J. Clarke Richardson Second Annual Grade Eight Football Camp. The camp consisted of a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon practice followed by a Sunday afternoon scrimmage and celebratory barbeque. The camp was coached entirely by current and former Storm Football players. Last year 42 players participated in the camp. Twenty-five of those young athletes played for the Junior Team this past fall with several earning starting positions.

Earth Week Clean Up Day 2012 PDF Print E-mail

cleanup1On Friday April 20th Richardson had another successful school and community clean-up. Fifteen classes totalling 280 students were out cleaning up their community.

"That's fantastic!" said Mr. Kirchner, an EcoTeam teacher, "This is one more thing that we do around here that show's school pride and that the students here really do care."

A special mention must be made for Mr. Parfitt's Grade 9 Boy's Ph. Ed. class. They approached the clean-up as a challenge, attacking the trash, and ended up pulling four shopping carts, tires, several pieces of lumber and numerous other 'who knows what' out of the creek area. Well done!

The Richardson EcoTeam would like to thank everyone for everything they did to help make it a great clean-up day and Earth Week!

Storm Cheerleaders Shine! PDF Print E-mail
cheerleaders

Coaches Forbes and Otter are brimming with pride as the Storm Cheerleading team returned from their meet with a strong second place finish. The team had two great performances at their Spring Classic competition. They placed second out of four competitive teams. There were only two points overall between the Storm and the first place team and they did beat them in the second run! There were sixteen points though between the Storm team and the third place school - even better!

If you have a moment, say congrats to any team members you see and wish them luck as they gear up for Nationals in Niagara Falls in a few weeks!

Congratulations! PDF Print E-mail
